My first book, Neither Liberal nor Conservative (2017, w/ Don Kinder), shows the scarcity & contingency of the public’s organized belief systems.
My award–winning second book, With Ballots & Bullets (2020), shows reciprocal links between partisan voting & violent behavior in the US Civil War. Partisanship helped mobilize mass violence, and the war’s violence changed subsequent partisan elections and war remembrances.
My third book, Radical American Partisanship (2022, w/ Lily Mason), investigates the nature of violent partisan attitudes today.
My next book, How WE Make American Democracy (2026-27), will be a doer’s guide that maps US democratization (representation & rights) past & future. It traces dominating & democratizing factions through history in parties & public, gauges public support for democratizing efforts, and interviews 150+ politics scholars, practitioners, & civic leaders on how they see democracy coming to America.
